CONGREGATIONAL LIFE

Chalice Circles

Hello Everyone, Chalice Circle Groups are about to start. We are planning our initial meetings for those who have signed up to join a Chalice Circle. This month, we are kicking off three new Small Ministry Chalice Circles. So far 28 people have signed up to begin meeting in 3 locations -- one in San Pedro, one in South Torrance/Hill, and one in Old Torrance.

Senior Covenant Group

Our Senior Covenant Group will meet on the first and third Tuesday of each month, from 2 to 3:30pm. This group is seeking seniors interested in a small group ministry type setting. The group basically consists of Marvel Burke, Noel Hammond, Denis and Linda Jensen, Barbara Paulsen and Steve Schlegel. They would like you to give them a try.

Check in by Zoom

Each Tuesday from 11am to noon , as well as each Wednesday afternoon from 3-4pm, Rev. Steve hosts a Zoom Social Call that is open to all. This is a call to check in and share joys, concerns, or simply just chat. These calls were originally designed for people who lived alone, but are really open to anyone.

Seekers

The open spiritual explorer group called “Seekers” will meet in the Sanctuary on the first and Third Wednesdays of each month at 10am. We share our lives and discuss a revolving series of interesting spiritual topics. Topics in the past have included the relevancy of the Ten-Commandments, the value of hypocrisy, and are we driven more by reason or emotion. Come.

Spiritual Writing Group

The PUC Spiritual Writing Group meets at 10 am on the second Wednesday of each month. All are welcome to come drop in on our writing group. Participants who attend should be prepared to share a 1 to 2 page (1-4 minute) personal piece on the topics announced the prior month. All levels of writers are welcome. This is more about sharing our experiences than it is about the deftness of our literary gifts. Come. This month our date and topic is to describe a fight you were in, nearly in, or an act of violence you witnessed or participated in.

Topical Discussion Group

This month we are adding a monthly adult discussion group prompted by topical newsworthy videos. These will regularly take place on the 2nd Wednesday of the Month from 1 to 2:30pm. At these topical discussions those present will pick from 3 roughly 20 minute vidoeo offerings to watch and prompt discussion. This is a drop in event open to all.

Camp DeBenneville

PUC’s Camp DeBenneville: Friday June 10th through Sunday June 12th Get away from it all! Well, all except your precious church friends. If you make the effort to come to DeBenneville I promise that after a couple hours of Eastbound traffic you will smell the scent of pine trees, the crackle of a fire, and the thought that you oughta get out of the Rat Race more often. Don’t forget to bring a bathing suit for the hot tub or the lake, hiking books for a walk in the woods, and a book to curl up with. Mostly bring you and yours. Cabin slots are filling up so please contact the office or see Janet and Andy if you are interested.

All Souls Church Traditional English Tea

UU Mass Action Storytelling Festival

Saturday night May 16th will bring us another collaborative night of entertainment for a good cause. In this case our partner and tenant Unitarian Universalist for Mass Action, (they rent the Elliot Room, employ Maggy, and Steve sits on the Board) will host a “Moth” like evening of storytellers. Six pre-vetted people will tell stories about moments when they were in transition. This is a fun event for a very good cause and an organization that hands us over 12 dollars a year. Please come and support this justice partner of ours.

Men's Group

First Thursday Morning Men’s Group 9:30 to 11am. Rev. Steve and will host an open gathering of Men. So far this meeting has moved to become a resource for rich cross generational discussion. Obviously, anyone who defines themselves as a man is invited to come. No reservation or commitment required. Coffee and light refreshments will be provided.

Grief Group

“Undefined Grief” Group meets on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month from 1pm to 2pm: Continually, in a trickle, people from within our community have wondered whether we are offering a grief group. The rate of request, and the uniqueness of people’s loss has never been consistent enough to demand that at any given moment! Nevertheless, the need has persisted. In that spirit, I/we have started this group to support anyone with any self-defined form of loss.

Who Is That?

At our Feb 13th Sunday Service as part of an extended postlude, we will offer a little quick fun quiz, I like to call “Who’s That?” On this Sunday after church we will show a series of photographs people send me of their younger years, and treat it as a fun quiz where people can guess who that person is. Anything from baby pictures to up to 25 years ago are acceptable. I will accept actual photos of you, and after scanning them I will return them. Or, even better, e-mail them to me.

Rev. Steve's Birthday Roast

What fun we all had on Sunday roasting Rev Steve on his 50th birthday! The gag gifts and candy board were imaginative and hilarious. I am sure Rev Steve felt the love that this congregation feels for him. Thank you to all who made this party happen.
